The Alpha Dog Theory. This is a topic asked about constantly. As a positive trainer, I focus on science based, tested and recreated methods. A lot of these concepts are used in society as humans. Do you have a job? Do you get paid for that job? Do you get your check every 2 weeks? This is an example of positive reinforcement. You get paid for doing your job. That money is a secondary reinforcer which means it equates to food, housing etc. things we need to survive (primary reinforcer). Every 2 weeks is a fixed-interval schedule of reinforcement. This same concept applies to dogs. Ask your dog to “Sit”. He sits, you give him a treat. You release and he gets up. This may be overly simplified but it makes my point. The below article from the Whole Dog Journal discusses this theory and how it can affect your furry family member.
The second article, specifically discusses “The Dog Whisper”. Although I don’t agree with his methods, I understand that some of his methods may be effective but at what cost? Going into more complex behaviors such a reactivity, I still focus on science and reward based methods. There is a lot of editing that goes into creating dog training shows for entertainment. Educating yourself helps prevent the misuse of these methods and causing unnecessary pain and fear to your dog.
