Canine Enrichment

Originally posted 2-20-18

Boredom and excess energy are two of the most common reasons for behavioral problems with dogs. To engage our furry family members, we can provide mental stimulation through enrichment activities. Although animal enrichment has always been there (especially in the zoological environment), in recent years the movement has really taken on a life of it’s own. Pet supply stores, big box stores, and DIY-ers are participating in the fun with new products and creative ideas.

Kongs (or Kong-like products) are usually the go-to for beginners. The KONG is non-toxic, dishwasher-safe, durable rubber toy that can be stuffed, boiled, and helps express natural behaviors, like chewing, scavenging and working for food. This is an ideal toy for dogs of all ages. Teething stage for puppies. Playtime for adults. Medication dispensary for seniors. Below are some tips on stuffing them. Be creative!

Remember, enrichment is not to make the dog’s life harder, it is to make it more interesting. We must exercise the mind and body.
